One of the most popular kind of tacos to make are chicken tacos. They taste good, are leaner than beef, and are inexpensive to cook. As a main taco filling, however, chicken doesn’t have quite as powerful a flavor as beef does. That’s why you’ll find most chicken taco recipes use a bunch of different spices to add flavor. Today, I want to share with you a creative topping I discovered to add an amazing flavor to your next batch of chicken tacos: hummus.
That’s right, hummus! For those of you not familiar with hummus, it’s a type of spread made from a combination of mashed chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Hummus is commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine, and over the last few years it has become extremely popular in the U.S. One of the main reasons for its popularity is it goes great with a wide variety of food. Many people simply eat it as a dip with different vegetables.
A few days ago I was really hungry while I was cooking up some chicken tacos for dinner. I couldn’t wait for the meal, so I opened up a container of hummus to dip some carrots in while I was cooking. I got a bit distracted while cooking and forgot to put the hummus back in the fridge. While I was putting together my tacos, I noticed the hummus still out and decided to give it a try as a topping. The flavor was amazing! The combination of chicken and hummus went perfectly together. I offered my new topping to several of my guests who also enjoyed the flavor. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this sooner!!
To be a little more specific, the type of hummus I used as a topping for my chicken tacos was roasted red pepper. It has a nice, garlicky flavor to it as well, but not too strong. I would highly recommend this type of hummus as a topping, although I suspect regular garlic hummus would also taste great.
So, next time you decide to cook up some chicken tacos, try some roasted red pepper hummus as a topping. I promise you’ll love the taste!

P.S. I just tried using garlic hummus today and it DID taste great!
